APS Fine Arts Program
Services Provided 2007-2008
Elementary Program Goals:
1)
Provide an annual arts experience for each elementary student delivered by
certified, endorsed, art and music specialists.
2)
Provide a variety of opportunities for classroom teachers to expand their
knowledge of instructional strategies for teaching the arts across the
curriculum, as well as their understanding of how the arts benefit their
students.
Services Provided To All Elementary Schools:
-
direct instruction for all students, K-5 (and pre-school as time
allows) in visual art and general music
-
hiring, supervision,
and professional development for 68 certified itinerant art and music
teachers and 2 teachers in dance and drama assigned to Eubank Literacy
and Fine Arts Academy
-
scheduling the
itinerant art and music teachers at each elementary school to insure
equitable distribution of arts instruction across the district
-
all consumable supplies and
equipment for arts instruction at no
cost to schools; this includes all art supplies and visuals, instruments,
recorders for students to keep, CDs, and children’s literature used in art
and music instruction
-
Scope and Sequence documents
in visual art and general music designed specifically for use by elementary
classroom teachers that are aligned with state and national arts education
standards
-
central clearinghouse
for arts-related community organizations
offering field trip opportunities as well as site-based activities &
programs
-
coordination and organization of
annual district-wide arts events: NM
Symphony Orchestra activities (“Peter & the Wolf” – 1st grade; concerts for
4th and 5th grades); Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Tour Performances; Weems
Artfest; & others.

coordination and installation
of “Art is Elementary” as well as the APS art exhibit
at the NM State Fair
-
advocacy
at the local and state levels for the advancement of arts education
-
professional development for classroom
teachers:
-
site-based in-services (as school schedules allow) provided by the itinerant
art/music teacher on topics of interest expressed by school staff
-
one-on-one consultation between the art/music itinerant teacher and
classroom teachers to share or develop specific arts activities that meet
the instructional needs of the classroom teacher
-
a variety of arts workshops offered by the APS ARTS Center staff (Montgomery
Complex)
-
arts-related resources available for checkout from the ARTS Center
-
a week-long workshop on arts integration strategies; tentative dates for
2005 are June 6-10;
8:30 – 12:30 daily
-
professional development for
elementary itinerant art and music teachers
is provided twice a month regarding
-
district
instructional initiatives that directly affect site-based instruction
-
current trends
in art and music instructional strategies, materials, and equipment.
These meeting times provide the itinerant teachers the same
opportunities for collaborative planning as that offered for site-based
teachers
Services Provided to Secondary
Schools
-
staffing allocations for band, chorus and orchestra positions
-
funding for bus transportation for high school bands to
perform at home football games
-
coordination and bid reviews for replacing of worn and
non-repairable school instruments from Mill Levy funds
-
coordination of/support for district music festivals
-
coordination of/support for district art, photography and
drama festivals
-
mentor program, in cooperation with the UNM Secondary Teacher
Induction Program, for first year visual and performing arts teachers and/or
those new to their content area
District Services

ARTS Center: Montgomery
Complex
The ARTS Center is a primary source of professional
development for any APS teacher, EA, administrator or support staff member
in the areas of visual art, general music, dance and drama. The ARTS Center
staff provides the following services and resources:
-
a staff of 5 resource teachers: one each for art, music,
dance, drama and literacy/library
-
books, slides, prints, CDs, tapes, videos, instruments &
other equipment for teaching the arts are available for check-out by
classroom teachers & other site-based personnel, parents, student
teachers, & UNM faculty
-
consultation with classroom teachers on lesson and unit
development, instructional strategies, integration across content areas
in the arts, and technical assistance for specific projects
-
school-site workshops and/or classroom demonstrations
-
arts integration workshops open to all district personnel
-
Music
Instrument Repair Department
-
staffed by 3 certified music instrument repair
technicians
-
provide repair and maintenance for all secondary
site-based music instruments
-
coordination of contracted services for tuning all
site-based pianos
-
FAN Fare:
Fine Arts program quarterly newsletter sent to district administration,
principals, secondary fine arts
teachers, and elementary Fine Arts Reps.
